FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I pay for services?

Happier At Home provides non medical home care, so medical insurance does not pay for care. Services are either private pay, Veteran’s Benefits, or paid by long term care insurance. Please call to talk with us to see if you qualify for Veteran’s Benefits or Long Term Care Insurance.

What are your rates of service?

Because all home care services and schedules are tailored to the needs of the client, the rate of service for each client is determined at the initial assessment meeting, when our nurse meets with the client and/or the client’s family to get a better idea of the client’s situation and needs. There is no charge for the assessment visit.

Are there additional charges if the coverage I need is on a weekend or after 5 p.m.?

No. Your rate will remain consistent despite the shift, whether you are receiving service on days, nights, weekdays or weekends. We feel that this is simplest for our clients and their families. There are no hidden charges. This way the client is never surprised. The only exception is if you receive service on a major holiday, in which case the rate is charged at time and one half for that day.  There is a charge for mileage if the caregiver uses her/his own car; currently that is .55/mile

How do we get started?

The first step is to call Happier At Home at 585-248-5021 and set up an appointment for a free assessment. The nurse will meet you and develop the Care Plan.  If needed, Happier At Home can initiate services within 24 hours.

What is a live-in situation and why would I want to consider it for my parents?

The live-in option is a great possibility for clients who would like the security of having someone with their loved one at all times. A live-in companion is with the client 20 hours per day, has a four hour break, and sleeps at night but will get up if your loved one is up. The live-in rate is less than the cost of hourly around-the-clock care. A live-in is a great alternative for families that want someone around continuously but do not need the caregiver to remain awake at night.

Why not hire a private caregiver through the paper?

We strongly recommend not doing this, as there are a number of risks you take. This person will not be bonded should any of your valuables turn up missing. They will also likely not be insured for liability within your home. Furthermore, if the person is not reporting their income, you may be held liable for payroll taxes by the government. As well, you could be liable if they are injured in your home and for unemployment benefits should you ever discontinue your relationship with that caregiver. There is no guarantee that they are properly trained to provide professional, trustworthy service to you or your loved one.

Does Happier At Home have anyone to help me understand the care that is right for me?

Happier At Home has nurses and professionals that can assist you in understanding the complexities of deciding on home care and understanding what level of care is appropriate for you.  If we believe that you require a higher level of care, we can help guide you to the appropriate service.

Can the caregiver provide transportation?

Yes, our caregivers can provide transportation to doctor’s appointments, running errands, or even going for a scenic drive. They may use their own car or use your car if you prefer.

Do you provide senior services to those in nursing homes or assisted living facilities?

Yes, Happier At Home provides care to residents in independent living centers, assisted living facilities and nursing homes who may require additional care.
